This made reaching a decision not an easy task.<br \/>\nFor the 2020 Margulis Prize we have chosen <strong>Yizhaq Engelberg<\/strong> for the following reasons:<br \/>\nThis year we nominate <strong>Yizhaq Engelberg<\/strong> to <strong>The Lev Margulis Memorial Prize<\/strong> in the field of microscopy in the Life Sciences for his outstanding achievements in the structural studies of a human antimicrobial peptide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yizhaq Engelberg<\/strong> found that the self-assembly of the active core (residues 17-29) of the human antibacterial LL-37 peptide into unique fibrils is essential for its antibacterial activity. He determined the crystal structure of LL-37 (17-29), which revealed a novel protein fibril arrangement forming a stable configuration of densely packed helices. Correspondingly, LL-37 (17-29) formed wide, ribbon-like, thermostable fibrils in solution, which co-localized with bacterial cells, killing them. Based on the structure, Yizhaq designed and conducted a series of mutations which he examined using microbiology, biophysical tools, confocal and electron microscopy, and crystal structures. The results suggest a tunable mechanism of action of LL-3717-29 via the formation of functional fibrils, and offers a prospective to design antimicrobial peptides with controllable activity and improved stability and bioavailability. The award committee was impressed by the wide range of structure-determining biophysical tools mastered and combined by Yizhaq during his work. The presented results are very novel and have just recently been uploaded to the bioRxiv preprint server with Yizhaq being the first and only other author next to his supervisor Meytal Landau.&#8221;<\/em><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-top: 0px solid black; border-bottom: 2px solid #D2421B;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding: 2px 0px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px; color: #d2421b;\">The Lev Margulis Memorial Prize 2021 &#8211; Materials Science, Idan Biran:<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-782\" style=\"border-radius: 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ismicroscopy.org.il\/ism2021\/files\/2021\/05\/Idan-Biran.png\" alt=\"Apps-user-info-icon\" width=\"100\" data-id=\"782\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">On behalf of the Jury of the Lev Margulis Prize, we are happy to announce that <strong>Idan Biran<\/strong> from the Weizmann Institute of Science is the recipient of <strong>the 2021 Lev Margulis Memorial Prize in the field of Materials Science<\/strong> for his work titled: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ismicroscopy.org.il\/ism2021\/files\/2021\/04\/Idan-Biran-Abstract-ISM2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><b>FOCAL SERIES RECONSTRUCTION FOR LOW-DOSE TEM IMAGES OF ORGANIC CRYSTALS<\/i><\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The decision of the Prize Committee is as follows:<br \/>\n<div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#c5c5c2;border-radius:7px;-moz-border-radius:7px;-webkit-border-radius:7px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#dfdfdc;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:7px;-moz-border-radius:7px;-webkit-border-radius:7px;\"><em>&#8220;This year, the Israel Society for Microscopy received many excellent applications for the Lev Margulis Memorial Prize for Microscopy in the field of Materials Science.<br \/>\nThe Jury committee congratulates the candidates, noting that it was a difficult task to choose the recipient.<br \/>\nThe committee chose Idan Biran, Weizmann Institute of Science, on his research topic titled: \u201cFocal series reconstruction for low-dose cryo-TEM images of small organic crystals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Idan developed and applied Focal Series Reconstruction (FSR) to examine the structure of organic crystals. These crystals, with applications for electro-optical devices, are sensitive to electron beam damage, and yet difficult to characterize by conventional X-ray diffraction.<br \/>\nIdan developed a hybrid method of FSR and averaging methods used in cryoEM of proteins (single particle methods). Thus, Idan was capable of applying automated methods developed for structural biologists on their cutting edge cryoEM instruments, to examine, at very high spatial resolution (0.16nm), Materials Science specimens that are extremely thin and beam sensitive.&#8221;<\/em><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- <strong>The Lev Margulis Memorial Prize<\/strong> is awarded annually to an outstanding <strong>Israeli student<\/strong> in the field of microscopy.\n\nIn alternate years, students are chosen from either the field of Life or Materials Science. <strong>This year the prize will be presented to a student working in the field of Materials Science.<\/strong>\n\nThe selected student will receive the prize during the opening ceremony of the annual conference, and will give a talk on his\/her work during the afternoon session.\n\nIn order to submit an application for the Lev Margulis prize:\n\n(a) An extended abstract (2 pages) should be sent to <a href=\"mailto: \nakohn@tauex.tau.ac.il?subject= ISM2021 Margulis extended abstract\">Prof. Amit Kohn<\/a>.\n\n(b) At least one recommendation letter (from the student\u2019s advisor) should be sent to <a href=\"mailto: \nakohn@tauex.tau.ac.il?subject= ISM2021 Margulis recommendation letter\">Prof. Amit Kohn (not via the student).<\/a> We request that the recommendation letters outline the unique microscopy aspects of the student\u2019s work and his\/her microscopy skills.\n\n(c)\u00a0If several people contributed the work please specify their names, affiliations.
