Margulis and Mutsafi Prizes

The 2025 Yael Mutsafi Memorial Prize Recipient:
On behalf of the jury of the Yael Mutsafi Prize, we are happy to announce that Zohar Lily Persky from the Weizmann Institute is the recipient of the 2025 Yael Mutsafi Prize in the field of Life Sciences for her work titled: “Dissecting The Phenotypic Landscape of Bacterial Populations Via Imaging Transcriptomics”.

We extend warm congratulations to Zohar, who will give an oral presentation of his work during the parallel sessions of ISM2025.


The ISM Lev Margulis & Yael Mutsafi Excellence Prizes :

The ISM is offering two prizes annually for outstanding students in the various fields of microscopy:

  1. The Lev Margulis Memorial Prize for outstanding students in the field of microscopy for Materials Sciences. This prize will be given to a work that deals with microscopy analysis of materials, including any sort of microscopy technique and image analysis.
  2. The Yael Mutsafi Memorial Prize for outstanding students in the field of microscopy for Life Sciences. This prize will be given to a work related to living systems, including any sort of microscopy technique and image analysis.

The prize recipients will receive the prizes during the opening session of the annual meeting and will present their work during the afternoon parallel sessions.

Lev Margulis immigrated to Israel in 1987 from the Soviet Union, after having been denied an exit visa for 8 years. He joined the Weizmann Institute of Science where he pioneered the use of TEM for materials science. Lev was a remarkable man and a true friend, always happy to share the happiest moments of discovering new structures of matter. Lev passed away untimely in 1995 at the age of 54.

Yael Mutsafi graduated with a PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science, where she studied the structure of giant viruses by multiple electron microscopy approaches. Yael was a promising scientist, a gifted microscopist, and an unforgettable person, loved and honored by all who knew her. Yael passed away in 2019 after a severe illness while in her post-doc studies in the US.

Judging Committee :

The applications will be evaluated by an external scientific committee appointed by the ISM chairperson and will be kept totally confidential.
